The name is something of a misnomer: this machine is not really an "extractor" at all, in the sense that it doesn't create steam. (Used with very hot water in the clean tank, there'll be some steam involved, but it's not like a professional steam-cleaning machine with an internal heater.) Yet the lightweight, handsomely designed Atlantis is an extremely effective carpet shampooer, thanks in part to the OptiHeat Heat Retention System; a temperature gauge lets you know when your tap water is hot enough for effective cleaning, and heat-retaining tanks keep water warm enough to work with for up to 30 minutes. The motorized brushes' unique side-to-side action does an especially good job scrubbing away dirt and stains, since it hits carpet fibers from every side, and the 11.4-amp motor provides decent suction for a non-professional machine.

But the real draw here is the thoughtful design, including a unique looped handle that lets users push double-handed, then folds down flat for storage. Pull-out water tanks don't have latches, so they're easy to both fill and empty. The detergent holder is separate from the clean and dirty water tanks--a nice touch, since it eliminates waste of prepared cleaning solution, and also enables rinse-only passes with clean water. The machine can also operate either with or without the brushes, so it can clean hard surfaces as well as carpet; the clear intake window lets users see when dirty water is no longer being suctioned up, and an extra-long 27-foot quick-release power cord aids maneuverability. The Atlantis comes with an accessory hose and nozzle for cleaning upholstery and stairs, and both of these onboard tools fit on a removable tool caddy.
