It weighs a hefty 64.2 pounds without the toner cartridges, and its shipping weight is 73.7 pounds. This qualifies as heavy, even for a color laser. Speed is one of the HL-4040CN's best attributes. Brother rates the printer at 21 pages per minute for both monochrome and color. It handled our business applications suite in a total time of 10 minutes 27 seconds, essentially tying the Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 6180N and the Dell Color Laser Printer 3110cn, two printers that are both a bit more expensive. The HL-4040CN's output quality is best described as good enough for most business purposes, but not impressive. The Dell 3110cn didn't do as well with text but did better with graphics and photos. The Xerox Phaser 6180N outshone the HL-4040CN on all three counts. The HL-4040CN did reasonably well on our text-output tests, with all of the fonts you might use for standard business documents qualifying as easily readable at five points, some qualifying at four points, and only one highly stylized font with heavy strokes needing as much as 20 points. Somewhat unusually, all of the standard fonts offered well-formed characters even at four points, but the strokes on some were so thin that they had a grayish look, making them a little hard to read. In any case, the printer can handle any typical business document without problems. Graphics quality was good enough for internal business use, but well short of the quality I would want to hand over to anyone I was trying to impress with my professionalism. Among other issues, I saw minor posterization (shading changing suddenly where it should change gradually), minor registration issues (white slices between two blocks of solid color), and a tendency for thin lines to disappear. Photo quality was certainly good enough for printing out Web pages with photos on them. You mayor may notalso consider the HL-4040CN's photos as good enough for outputting things such as client newsletters. In photos I saw visible dithering in the form of both graininess and mild patterns, along with a distinct yellow color shift that took skin tones and other colors out of the realm of the reasonably realistic. One other potential issue is the HL-4040CN's paper-handling. The printer's 300-sheet input capacity, divided into a 250-sheet drawer and a 50-sheet paper tray, is suitable for personal use or light-duty use in a small office, but no additional trays are available if you need them, and there's no duplexer option for printing on both sides of the page. If you need better paper-handling, you may want to wait for Brother's HL-4070CDW. It isn't available yet at this writing, but will be built around the same engine and will include standard duplexing along with wireless networking and a 500-sheet paper tray option. A second, minor issue is that paper in our tests comes out of the HL-4040CN with a slight curl in it, which can be annoying if you're trying to work with a stack of paper. That said, the HL-4040CN still qualifies as a reasonable choice for the price, with good speed and acceptable output quality for most purposes. Fast color output.
